Note
Acknowledges receipt of a barrel of cider and informs Sacket of the "action between the French and English fleets off the capes of Virginia on the 16th ulto. in which a number of men were killed and wounded on both sides and several ships severely damaged."
British casualty figures: 1 lieutenant, 1 midshipman, and 40 seamen killed and 80 wounded; French figures are not yet known
Also notes recent action between Nathanael Greene and Lord Cornwallis with "considerable loss on both sides ... [though] no official reports [have] yet come to hand." The battle referred to is Guilford Courthouse.
Refers to the "expectations of capturing Arnold and his army" and to Lafayette's delay at Annapolis. Heath was in command at West Point, the post previously held by Arnold.
