New method of constructing bridge piles, particularly in sandy or muddy terrains, protected by caissons which prevented the natural destruction of the piles. Tardif, an engineer in Amiens, presented his new design to the Acadamie Royale des Sciences in 1757, stating that it was similar in design to the foundations of the Westminster Bridge in London. He further illustrates the use of his design for protecting fortresses built in water.
