Note
John, recently returned on sick leave from Quebec, where he had commanded the Captain under Boscawen, writes to his brother about his hope, should the war to continue, to return to duty on "a ship to go under the Command of my Friend Admiral Holmes to the West Indies." Or if peace returns, "I will try for a Ship to wait on you, and tell you a truth, that I had rather bring you safe to England, than be Master of the best prize."
Listed among the personal goods he awaits are "a pipe of Madeira, four quarter casks of port and a hogshead of good old Jamaica Rum"
