Summary
Journal kept aboard the French 80-gun ship Duc de Bourgogne in July 1778, describing the ship and crew, the composition of the French fleet, sailing conditions, maneuvers, signals, and sightings of British vessels. The journal records events surrounding the Battle of Ushant (Ouessant), July 27, 1778. After becoming separated from the main French fleet, the Duc de Bourgogne did not participate in the battle and returned to Brest.

Signed and dated at foot of page [18]: "A Brest, le 30 juillet 1778, Charritte" [i.e. Charitte].
Includes a description of Le Duc de Bourgogne, a ship of 80 guns, her crew and ballast as well as the other French ships and their commanders.
Also includes details of manoeuvres between the 2nd and 31st of July & sightings of British ships.
Black leather ownership label stamped in gold: J.M. Maps collection.
English translation, an ink drawing in map form of the events described in the journal, and a typewritten account of the battle are retained in the case file.
Eight engravings of Augustus Keppel acquired with the manuscript are cataloged separately as P&E L2001F158.1-8.

Historical Data
Charles de Charitte (1733–1815) was a French naval officer who entered the service in 1749 and rose from ensign and lieutenant to captain, squadron commander, rear admiral, and vice admiral. During the American Revolution, he served aboard the Duc de Bourgogne under d’Orvilliers and later commanded the Bourgogne in de Grasse’s fleet, participating in the Battle of the Chesapeake and the Yorktown campaign. A Grand Cross of Saint-Louis, he was an original member of the Société des Cincinnati de France.
