Note
Signed and dated at foot of p. [18]: A Brest, le 30 juillet 1778, Charritte [i.e. Charitte].
Charitte was Master of Le Duc de Bourgogne, one of the ships under the command of the Comte d'Orvilliers.
The journal covers events leading up to and following the Battle of Ushant [i.e. Ouessant], 17 July 1778, which event secured the safe passage of the French fleet and eventually enabled its sailing to American waters. However, due to miscommunication, Le Duc de Bourgogne became separated from the French fleet and did not participate in the Battle of Ushant itself.
Includes a description of Le Duc de Bourgogne, a ship of 80 guns, her crew and ballast as well as the other French ships and their commanders.
Also includes details of manoeuvres between the 2nd and 31st of July & sightings of British ships.
Charitte was an original member of the Société des Cincinnati de France. Orvilliers was eligible to the Society of the Cincinnati but apparently never joined.
Black leather ownership label stamped in gold: J.M. Maps collection.
For English translation, see case file, which also includes an ink drawing in map form of the events described in the journal; also a typewritten account in English of the battle in case file.
Purchased with the manuscript and cataloged separately are 8 engravings, taken from various sources, of Augustus Keppel, Orvilliers' opponent during the battle (P&E L2001F158.1-8)
