Summary
Observations by Louis-Philippe de Rigaud, marquis de Vaudreuil, concerning the Battle of the Saintes on 12 April 1782 and accusations made against him by the comte de Grasse. Following an introductory statement explaining his purpose and defending the captains who served with him during the battle, the manuscript presents de Grasse's response to Vaudreuil's observations alongside Vaudreuil's point-by-point reply to thirty accusations that he had abandoned de Grasse during the engagement. Vaudreuil describes the positions and condition of the ships, orders given, and naval maneuvers considered and carried out, and discusses the conduct of Bougainville, Mithon de Genouilly, and Darros.

Historical Data
Louis-Philippe de Rigaud, marquis de Vaudreuil (1724-1802), was a French naval officer who served during the American Revolutionary War, including at Ushant, Grenada, Savannah, and in operations under d'Estaing and de Guichen. As chef d'escadre under the comte de Grasse, he commanded the Triomphant at the Battle of the Saintes on 12 April 1782 and was promoted to lieutenant général des armées navales later that year.
