Note
An unidentified Newport merchant describes to [Gov.?] Martin the interruption of commercial intercourse between remote states caused by "the long and grevious war .... The enemy taking possession of this town in 1776 and of almost everyone's houses & stores especially those ... not attached to their cause, of w[hi]ch number we were particularly marked out... our counting house taken ..., all our papers thrown into the street ...." With the "blessings of peace restored," he desires to close "long standing accounts we have in your state."
