Note
Beall writes to Custis concerning Beall's application for compensation for his revolutionary war service: "Reflecting on my state of indigence I am forceably brought to the case of my late unfortunate application to my Country..."
On verso: "The act of Congress in behalf of our Dear Friend General Lafayet [sic] is a credit to our Country, as it hold forth just esteem for his great service, and is an act of strict justice for both his labours & purse in our behalf."
Right top corner torn away, including the date; apparently written in 1825 (there was an act of Congress in Dec. 1824 to make of gift to Lafayette in repayment for his services during the revolutionary war.
