Pencilled note in an unidentified hand at head of p. [1]: Handwriting of Chr. Avery. Many of the signers were originally from Connecticut, apparently having gone first to the Wyoming Valley Docket title Context: Because the British had successfully negotiated treaties with local Indian tribes, and because American attempts by General Schuyler to negotiate similar treaties had failed, the Westmorelanders feared increased attacks by the Indians. Further, the 8th Pennsylvania Regiment, which had previously defended the area, was transferred to Fort Pitt, leaving the Westmoreland area defenseless. This petition seeks both manpower and increased supplies of gunpowder and ammunition from the Continental Congress. Shortly after receiving the petition, Congress did charter a new regiment and sent the requested supplies and ammunition, but the relief was short lived. For further details, see case file. Butler was an original member of the Connecticut Society of the Cincinnati; Gore and Jenkins were eligible but did not join.
Both Dorrance (Connecticut militia) and Ransom (Connecticut Continental Wyoming Valley Company) were killed 3 July 1778
