Note
"There are three privates of the 5th Conn.t Reg.t at West Point, more than was detail'd for that post. They have been detain'd by Genl. McDougall's order. I wish your order for them to join the Regt. If that cannot be given, that I may be permited [sic] to relieve them with men less able to do field duty."
The three soldiers named: James Hooker, Ruben Sherman, and John Roberts.
Hand, McDougall, and Smith were all original members of the Society of the Cincinnati.
