Note
The engraving, which is part of this framed display, has been matted to only reveal the upper half containing a circular, handcolored, portrait of Lafayette, full bust, in profile to the left in uniform with queue, and wearing the eagle of the Society of the Cincinnati on his left lapel, by Levachez. Below the portrait is a rectangular black and white engraving of the "Federation generale au champ de Mars le14 Juillet 1790" by Duplessi-Bertaux. The title of the engraving is displayed in the mat opening. However, the three paragraph biographical sketch of Lafayette, in French, and the outer engraved framing of the original engraving are covered by the mat. Over the original engraving's tribute of Lafayette is a matted manuscript in Lafayette's hand commenting on the coincicence of the deaths of John Adams and Thomas Jefferson on the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1826.
The Lafayette manuscript is cataloged separately as MSS L1958.721.3.
Gift of Commander and Mrs. Marvin R. Robbins in the name of Mary Brent Farley Elmore, of Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
It is not clear whether the complete engraving has been preserved below the mat. To view the full engraving, see the case file or reference a copy of the engraving as it appears in the catalogue of an exhibit on the Americans and the French revolution, by Wiesinger, catalogued as 944.04 W649 1989, page 67.
Lafayette was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati from France.
