Note
Part 1. (bound): List of officers entitled to land. It lists some 240 names of officers of the Maryland line showing name, rank, remarks, casualities, number of lots drawn, and to whom delivered and when. Each page is signed at the foot by C. Richmond Aud. Genl.
Among the loose papers in part 2 (stored flat in same box) are drafts for tracts of lands and a number of letters, including some copies retained by the writer identified as David Lynn. In one, Lynn writes, "This call on me required that I should ... examine a Book which is now before me, containing the names of all the Officers & Soldiers of the Maryland line .... This list ... was made out by the Audr. Genl. of Maryld. after the War ended from the Muster Rolls of the army .... I was one of three Comrs. appointed ... to make the distribution of these lands. The list was put into our hands & when the distribution was completed it was left in my hands & still remains in my possn."
For background, see Lowdermilk's History of Cumberland [Maryland] (Washington, 1878), p. 266: "The act of 1788 provided that three commissioners be appointed to fix the value of the lands occupied by the aforegoing persons and to settle all disputes that might arise concerning pre-emption. The commissioners appointed were David Lynn, Daniel Cresap, and Benjamin Brookes."
