Pawling was a Colonel in the New York militia, 1775-1778 -- see F. Heitman. Historical register; his unit was apparently federalized at the time.
Columnar list of officers (1 captain at L16 for the month; 2 lieutenants at L10.16; 3 sergeants, 3 corporals, 1 drummer, and 40 privates at L2.13.4) whose wages totalled L164.7.1 for the month
