Hartley's Additional Continental Regiment had been authorized 12 Jan. 1777 and organized that spring in Philadelphia. On 22 May 1777, it was assigned to the 1st Pennsylvania Brigade, an element of the main army -- see R.K. Wright, The Continental Army, p. 322.
