A John Mitchell was captain of the galley London and the Saint George in the 1740's -- see J. W. Damer Powell, Bristol privateers and ships of war (1930) p. 181-182.
Reports the death in action of "your brave brother ... of Cape Ortugal [i. e. Ortegal?]" after engaging 2 French privateers. "Your unfortunate brother intended to see her into your place & leave her with you."
Near Scilly, their ship "fell in with a sloop privateer with her prize which was a ship from Jamaica for London called ye Hope Chambers.... The next morning ... gave chase to ... a French frigate Privateer of Dunkirk" which captured the survivors.
Carter was "retaken with part of our ship comp[an]y ye day following by His Majesty's Ship Essex in sight of Ushant."
