Note
Allen, a nephew of Enoch Coffin who survived the wreck of the brig General Arnold, recounts his uncle's tales of the privateer's last voyage in December 1778.
"Enoch ... became a sailor ... and shipd. with six other young men from Edgartown on board the privateer Gen. Arnold, Capt. John Magee fitted out in splendid style with 100 men for a six months cruise...."
"Capt. Magee, my uncle and one more were the only three who escaped freezing." Two of them filled their boots with rum, thereby saving those limbs.
Allen also traces Coffin's later sailing career as well as his commercial endeavors as a tavern keeper.
