Note
Satiric print showing the effects of the American Revolution upon English commerce. An emaciated cow, shorn of one horn, grazes on thistles, representing the Scottish influences. Men, representing France, Spain, and Holland have milked the cow. In the foreground, John Bull kneels in prayer, while rats gnaw backnotes from a cofer, and the British lion howls because he hurt his foot on a broken tea pot. In the background, the surrender at Yorktown shows four Englishmen, humbly approaching an American Indian Princess, who sits on a throne surrounded by Justice, Mars, and Hercules. At America's feet lie broken shackles and paddles, and in front of the throne, a liberty cap rests on a lance. Another Indian prepares barrels of valuable goods for shipping to Marseille, Nantes and Kadix. Out at sea, Howe's flagship, Eagle, has sunk while the French fleet sails away.
Sequel to the previous work, A picturesque view of the state of the Nation for February 1778, which was later published in a continental version with Dutch titles and descriptions. See P&E L2001F303, which is the French version.
Exhibited at Anderson House in a display of satirical prints, caricatures, and political incorrectness in the age of reason, May 14 - September 30, 2002. Stored as matted.
