One of only two Revolutionary War courts-martial from the British side concerning conduct in the United States: Gordon had been accused by Lieut. Col. Frederick Thomas of not being at the head of the troops taking the heights of Springfield. Thomas was court-martialed in September, 1780, by Gordon, his superior officer, "for aspersing his character", but was aqcuitted, and the court-martial was printed in London, 1781 (973.336 S7tho, 1781). Gordon then asked for the present court-martial to clear his name, and he was also acquitted.
