Description
1 two-tone print ; mounted on mat board 31 x 40 cm., opening 24 x 34 cm.
Call Number
P&E L2007D32
Note
The tavern, pictured in a small town setting, shows the building before the addition of a third story and attic roof after the fire of 1832. This taller modern structure is the one seen today and pictured most often. The original building featured a covered first floor porch along the street and horses are shown at a hitching post near the front door.
This etching may have been commissioned by the Sons of the Revolution in the State of New York as a souvenir for their members at their Annual Banquet. The organization now owns Fraunces Tavern and maintain it as their headquarters and a museum. This etching is without letters but contains a small inset sketch of a room with two crossed swords at the bottom and is hand signed by the artist.
This etching is a gift from Mr. Lester A. Pratt of the Rhode Island Society. He received it from Dr. Welton D. Brown of Nichols, N.Y., a collector.
Museum #1078. See the case file for information on the gift. The print was removed from its frame to be preserved in the P&E files in the vault.
Digitized image available.
