Note
Full-length, to the right, in uniform, seated on a chair. His right hand is resting on his knee and his left arm rests on the back of the chair. His sword rests against his left leg. He is seated in the hold of a ship with a cannon in the background. The eagle of the Society of the Cincinnati is pinned to his left lapel.
Below the signature title, it reads, "From the original painting by Chappel in the possession of the publsihers." The publisher and copyright information follow.
This is a hand colored copy of the illusitration from Duyckinck, National portrait gallery of eminant Americans, Vol 2, between pages 82 and 83.
The copy on sheet 28 x 18 cm. is from the Thomas Collection
Thomas MacDonough was made an honorary member of the Society of the Cincinnati by the state of New York in 1815.
