Note
George Washington, head and shoulders, torso facing forward, head to the left, in uniform without hat. Pen and ink on deer skin, vignette. At the lower right, "1776 J.T."
The photograph has been framed in a simple 5/8" black frame. On the back are three pieces of information: At the top it reads: "To Anderson House Museum of the Society of Cincinnati, March 22, 1954, Warren Robinson Austin." Next, typewitten on a piece of paper glued to the back: "Feb.17,1940, Judge Arthur E. Hopkins of Louisville, Kentucky, presented Warren R. Austin this photograph, saying: 'Included with the above is a photograph of a sketch in pen and ink on deer skin of General George Washington, which was done by John Trumbull on the occasion of Washington's 44th birthday. I have the original and also a smaller sketch of Daniel Boone done by the same artist. The Washington portrait was not idealized and it is quiet apparent it represents him as he was in life." At the bottom, the following title is typed on another piece of paper glued to the back: "General George Washington. Sketched from life on his 44th birthday by John Trumbull. Done on white deer skin. Owned by Arthur E. Hopkins of Louisville, Ky. Feb. 12, 1940."
Gift of Warren Robinson Austin ( Hon. N.H.).
