Eliot welcomes his brother to the ministry. He explains that his Fairfield house and library "were plundered and consumed by the British and Hessian troops, and the American refugees, under the command of General Tryon." The incident occurred on July 7, 1779; they set fire to the town, including his church, despite assurances by the General that it "should be saved."
