Regiment identified from Hodgkins' service; he became Capt. in the 15th Massachusetts on 1 Jan. 1777, the same time that Bigelow assumed command -- see F. Heitman. Historical register of officers of the Continental Army ( 1982), p. 293. Bradish and Saywer were also members of the 15th Massachusetts.
Date assigned on basis of internal evidence that records disbursements for recruiting services between 1 Feb. and 23 Sept. 1777.
Recipients of funds: Capt. Joseph Hodgkins for recruiting forty [one?] men at 1 1/3 dollars per man; Maj. [illegible; possibly "my own"?] subsistence while recruiting service from 1 Feb. 1777 to 9 July; Lieut. Sawyer on the recruiting service from 1 Feb. 1777 to 23 Sept. ;Lieut. Houdin for subsistence while recruiting from 1 Feb. to 1 Aug.
The regiment was organized in spring, 1777, at Boston and consisted of eight companies from Worcester, Middlesex, Cumberland, Essex, Berkshire, and Bristol Counties. In June, it was assigned the 2nd Massachusetts Brigade, an element of the Highlands Dept. On 4 July, 1777 it was relieved from that Dept. and assigned to the Northern Dept. In September, it participated in the first battle of Saratoga.--See R.K. Wright. The Continental Army (1983)
