At the time of composition, Gerrish was a Captain in the 12th Massachusetts Regiment, Continental Foot, commanded by Col. Moses Little. His regiment was stationed in New York throughout 1776.
Includes a rudimentary muster roll, list of dead soldiers, financial accounts and notations, and a short narrative of the defeat of the American troops at Long Island and their subsequent retreat, Aug. 22- Nov. 15, 1776.
