Note
This folder contains 35 of the pages from this book and represent most of the illustrations in the work. They carry accession # P&E L93.1-35. In many cases these copies are in better condition than the ones in the library copy of the book, although many have water damage. Most are wood engravings, hand colored. Others are steel engravings. They are titled as follows:
"Putnam receiving the news of the battle of Lexington" Steel engraving by G. White, art., and A. B. Walter, egr. This engraving appears to be a copy of the frontispiece to Graham's Magazine, Vol. XLV, No. 1, 1854, which contains this addition below the title, "Engraved expressly for Graham's Magazine".
"Washington in 1772, aetatis 40", from an original painting (after C.W. Peale) in the possession of George W. P. Custis, with certification of such and signed by Custis, Arlington House, July 18, 1830. Steel engraving by A Dickenson, art., and J.W. Steel, egr.. A variation of #14 in the reference Hart, Charles H. Cat.of the Engraved Portraits of Washington on which any references to the copyright by the artist or the publication in Graham's Magazine has been removed.
"Lafayette's inteview with Louis 16 & Marie Antoinette previous to his departure for America" Steel engraving by C.H. Schmolsze, art., and A.B. Walter, egr. This engraving is also probably from Graham's Magazine.
"Encampment at Valley Forge. Washington and His Wife visiting the troops." Steel engraving by C. Schnessele, art., and A.B.Walter, egr. This is a copy of this engraving from Graham's Magazine, Vol. XIL, No. 2, 1854 with the lettering below the title, "Engraved expressly for Graham's Magazine removed. See P&E L2007D23m.
