Keppel had called for help in forming a line against an attacking French fleet; Sir Hugh Palliser, one of the Lords of the Admiralty, failed to answer Keppel's call and the latter's hostility toward the government and Sir Hugh resulted in this court martial. Keppel was acquitted.
