An Edward Stevens of Culpeper, Virginia, was a Col. in the 10th Virginia which he served at Brandywine, where "his gallant exertions saved a part of the army from capture and covered the retreat." (William and Mary Quarterly, 2nd ser., vol. I, p. 160). Nicholas Taliaferro, then aged 20, was an ensign in this regiment. The 2 families were "neighbors and friends in peace and companions in war."
