This is a pair of uniformed soldiers, a General and a Rifleman, that appear as an illustration in Barnard's New Complete & Authentic History of England, as stated at the top of the broad border, with the titles of the figures in the border below. The original rifleman appeared as an illustration in An Impartial History of the War in America, published by London & Carlisle in 1780. [see P&E L2004D44m]. The use of the skull and crossbones with the words " or Liberty" on the caps represents the popular slogan of the day "Liberty and Death" and the letters CC on the rifleman's pouch represents a soldier in the service of the Continental Congress. In the handcolored renderings, one of the copies shows the general's jacket in green and the rifleman in red, in another the general's jacket is red and the rifleman's is blue, and in the handcolored pair, the general's is green with red trim and the rifleman's is blue with a red sash.
