Sir Edward Vernon was appointed commander-in-chief of British naval forces in the East Indies in May 1776. He boarded his flagship Rippon at Portsmouth on June 15 and sailed for India on Nov. 24. Dispatches were sent back from Madeira and the Cape of Good Hope, several detailing the capture of American privateers off the coast of Brazil.
First leaf missing
Contains copies of hundreds of orders and letters on every phase of British naval activity in the East Indies at the time of the American Revolution, including orders of battle, messages back to the Admiralty, supplies, sailors, health, signals, etc.
Includes letter (p.118) dated July 28, 1778 containing the order to wage war against France in India. Other letters include more information on the early battles of the American Revolution in India including naval actions at the Siege of Pondicherry (August-October 1778).
