The fleet left France in 1781, anchoring at Hampton Roads on 29 Aug. 1781. In early September they landed troops who joined Lafayette's army, and transported soldiers to the James River. Though successful in bringing about the surrender of Cornwallis, in Nov. they sailed to the West Indies where they were defeated by Rodney's fleet who captured de Grasse and his ship.
