Head-and-shoulders portrait, facing slightly right. Stipple. Triple line border 1/16.
This engraving is based on a painting of Oliver Wolcott by Ralph Earle in 1789. The Earl painting was three-quarter length, but Wolcott's daughter, Laura Wolcott Gibbs, an amateur painter, made a reduced copy of the portrait, which was sent in 1819, to Mr. Joseph Delaplaine in Philadelphia to hang in his gallery. Several engravings, including this one, were made from the daughter's reduced copy, in which the facial features were reportedly softened.
Oliver Wolcott was a Major General in the Connecticut Militia and an eligible member of the Society of the Cincinnati from the State of Massachusetts.
This engraving appears in Sanderson's Biography of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence.
