Call Number
MSS L1999F106
Note
Poem in 12 stanzas of 6 lines each, composed by Lady Elizabeth Craven, later Margravine of Anspach.
In an unidentified hand.
Date surmised from ms. notations on two printed excerpts (from "Morn[ing] Her[ald?]) on same leaf, one dated in ink Dec. 1790; the other, Jan. 1791. The orginal poem probably appeared shortly after Dec. 1781, when Arnold first arrived in London. George Germaine had died in 1785 before Arnold's 1791 return to England.
English Revolutionary figures mentioned include Germaine (a.k.a Sackville) and Galloway (stanza 2, 6, 7 and 12) Sir Guy [Carleton] and [Jeffery] Amherst (stanza 3) and Burgoyne (stanza 4).
Americans mentioned include Washington (stanza 1) and [John] Paul Jones (stanza 9),
Pasted down to large folio sheet of sugar paper (41 x 25 cm.) Apparently originally written on 4 separate pages, each of which bears double ruled borders in red ink.
Provenance: "From the household of Dr. Cheston of Gloucester" (bookseller's note) -- see case file.
