,A nurse (the English ministry) rocks a Hessian and his horse in a cradle. To the right, a fashionably uniformed soldier warms himself at the fire. Outside the house, to the left, a Hessian is filling bags of grain (money) that are being carted away. Below the prints is a poem where the nurse is told that the "baby bunting" will "leave off hunting" when she can "geef no more and be, like de Hess--ns poore"
This caricature relates to the treaty with the Landgrave of Hesse whereby he was to be paid for each soldier. Also refers to the changes in uniform after 1739, where soldiers wore tight coat, powdered hair, and a clubbed pigtail.
Appearing below the engraving on the right "sold in Mary's Building Covent Garden - whr. is 50 more." The Covent Garden address may be fictitious.
Exhibited at Anderson House in a display of satirical prints, caricatures, and political incorrectness in the age of reason, May 14 - September 30, 2002. Stored as matted.
