Lafayette also encloses a letter from L’Enfant, extracts of which are copied on the same sheet. L’Enfant complains of his inability to pay his debts. L'Enfant also comments on Houdon’s presentation of “one of the best resemblances of General Washington to be made” to Congress and bemoaning Congress’s lack of action on plans he submitted for building new forts on the frontier or building a federal town, as he has no regular source of income.
