Engraving: Head and shoulders in profile in uniform. On his left lapel hang the Ordre of St. Louis and the Eagle of the Society of the Cincinnati. Oval with border 2/16 inside rectangle with shaded border 2/16 and horizontal stripes. Below is an extension of the rectangle with vertical stripes and a plate containing the title and the following quotation by Pierre Dubac: "Teras sant les abus, sans craindre aucun orage Suscite par l'envi, brave par son courage, Ce heros jeune encore, par sa male equite Defenseur eloquent de notre liberte, Moissonne des lauriers dans les champs de la gloire, Et voit pour lui s'ouvrir le temple de memoire."
Manuscript: "Henri, my dear sir, my letter for the president which you have been pleased to promise to send with your dispatches provided it has arrived in time for six o'clock.. Most truly and affectionally yours, Lafayette. I have heard from our travelling young friends who require their high compliments to you. Sunday 2 o'clock"
The manuscript and the engraving are matted together with additional borders and framed 31 X 38 cm.
The engraving appears to be after one of the contemporary portraits of Lafayette as Commander of the National Guard during the French Revolution. The source might be the physionotrace by Quenedey in 1795.
