Library has another copy descended through the author’s family & bears added ms. in his own hand (L2015F79): includes biographical & genealogical note in ink on front pastedown & front free endpaper (probably by Alexander M. Harrison who married Thacher's great-grand daughter, Jennie Elliott Sever); ms. inscription on front free endpaper: "C. W.. Sever, Plymouth Mass. Presented to A M Harrison March 24th 1860" (Charles William Sever, Harrison's brother-in-law); 4 ms. letters & document ([4] leaves ([3] fold.]) tipped in on front endpapers, p. 228 & back pastedown; ms. tipped in on p. 228: original page from James Thacher’s wartime diary dated March 1780 during the Continental Army's winter encampment at Morristown: "… We have been several times without meat for several successive days & then as many days without bread, & without forage for our horses, & destitute of medicine & necessary stores for our sick soldiers. These complicated sufferings & privations are such that the patience of our army is on the point of being exhausted. But we have one great consolation, we have a Washington for our Commander. In him we have full faith & entire confidence we believe him capable of doing more & better for us & for the cause of our country than any other man in existence. We believe also that Divine Providence has decreed that we shall not be brought under the yoke of our cruel enemies"; also includes 2 retained copies of letters (tipped in on front endpaper & back pastedown): Thacher wrote in 1834 recalling details the execution of British spy Major John Andre on October 20, 1780. Thacher was challenging the charge of British consul James Buchanan, who upon exhuming Andre’s remains to transport them to England for burial at Westminster Abbey in 1821, claimed that Major Andre had been disgracefully stripped on his uniform by the Americans. Thacher’s investigation turned up a contemporary newspaper account of the execution: "He was dressed in full uniform &, after the execution his servant demanded his clothing, which he received. His body was buried near the gallows"; ms. inscriptions tipped in on front pastedown & back free endpaper: "James Thacher M.D. Surgeon"; "Charles Sever" (father of Thacher's great-grand daughter, Jennie Elliott Sever); printed obituary tipped in on back free endpaper: obituary of Daniel Robert Elliott (father of Thacher's granddaughter Jane Elliott).
