Hale is standing under a tree as his hands are being tied behind him. A pick and shovel are shown on the ground to the right. A drummer stands at the ready in the lower left, while a large group of British troops surround the site at the rear. Cunningham stands defiantly watching and waiting.
This is page 745, published in Harper's Weekly, November 24, 1860. On the reverse is Harper's story about this engraving and another engraving, published on page 744 in the same issue, showing Sergeant Jasper raising the South Carolina flag on Spring Hill Redoubt, Savannah, October 9, 1799.
