Full bust to the left, in uniform. On ribbons around his neck are the Society of the Cincinnati eagle and the Congressional medal awarded to Major General Gates for the victory at Saratoga, 1777. Oval in rectangular frame. A metal placque is attached to the frame below the portrait with the title.
This is a photograph of a oil painting of Major General Gates. The painter and the location of the painting are unknown. However, stamped on the reverse is a credit requirement that any reproduction or publishing of the photograph must credit "Photo by U. S. Army Signal Corps" and permission must be obtained from the War Department if used in commercial advertising.
Horatio Gates was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati from the state of Virginia and later from New York.
