3/4 length standing to right, face almost forward. Carrying a rod in the right hand, left hand pointing downward. Vignette with suggestion of a battle in the right background. Family coat of arms appears above the title.
Above the title and surrounding the coat of arms it reads: "From an original full-length life size portrait in the gallery of the Essex Institute, Salem, Mass.tts, deposited by Mr. Geo. A. Ward A.D. 1821."
