Note
Bust, head in profile, facing left, in uniform. Two medals are pinned to the left lapel, probably representing the Ordre of Saint Louis and the eagle of the Society of the Cincinnati. The sketch is mounted on cardboard.
Artist unknown, but it appears to be a sketch in a style similar to the pencil sketch by Duvivier that was used for a commerative medal, July 15, 1789. The Duvilivier work was probably after a watercolor portrait by William Grimaldi, painted in France in 1790 and depicts Lafayette after his appointment to the Paris National Guard, July 15, 1789.

Lafayette was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati from France.
