A young Lafayette, full-length to the left, in uniform, seated at small round table which holds a quill pen in an inkwell and a book, legs crossed with his sword belted on his left handing toward the floor next to the point where his left glove is lying. He is holding diagram of a fortification in his right hand. A drum, upon which his hat is lying. a flag and two rifles stand in the corner right behind him. On his left lapel is the cross of the Ordre of St. Louis. Title is an facsimilie signature.
These copies are similar to P&E L1993.760m, which is an illustration from Schroeder's Life & Times of Washington, Vol II, between pages 326 & 327. These copies are probably from an earlier edition, and carry an 1863 copyright by Johnson, Fry & Co., Pubishers, not the 1857 copyright by Martin, Johnson & Co., Publishers. In addition, the 1857 copy has "Engraved by J. LeMare printed on the right, below the picture, and below the title states "From an authentic portrait in the possession of the Publishers." These have no reference to an engraver.
All these copies state below the title, "From an authentic painting in the possession of the Publishers"
