Note
President Tyler thanks historian Campbell for sending a copy of The Bland Papers which the latter had edited: "I wish we had more laborers engagd in gathering together the materials for a faithful and accurate history of the revolution. Those materials are scatterd all over the country in the form of letters and traditionary incidents, which every day become more difficult to collect, and yet which are more and more interesting as time rolls on. History generally presents but a mere skeleton of what it proposes to hand down to posterity, while the materials from private stores would constitute the elements of a perfect form."
Col. Bland had served in the 3rd Regiment, Virginia Continental Line.
