Seventeen toasts, ending with one to "our illustrious guest, Major General Charles Cotesworth Pinckney; the virtuous patriot, gallant soldier, and independent statesman. 'A man without fear and without reproach'," at what the newspaper ("The Rhode-Island American, and general advertiser") described as "Publick Dinner" at the City Hotel in Philadelphia, on Wednesday, August 21, 1811. Toast: 1. The United States (Their independence was achieved by virtue and valour, may it never be lost by treachery and cowardice). 2. The glorious memory of the immortal Washington ("Passing in proud transmission to remotest ages, it shall endure for ever"). 5. The memory of Hamilton, and the other dparted heroes and statesmen of the revolution. 6. The surviving soldiers of the revolution (Honour for their services, and a liberal spirit to adjust their unrequited claims). 17. Our fair countrywomen (Their protection is our first duty, their love our best reward).
