Note
Three-quarter length, standing, facing right, in uniform, wearing a hat. Holding a pike in his right hand. Left hand on hip. Sword at his side. Vignette. Title is a facsimilie signature.
In Cresswell's The American Revolution in drawings and prints, he cites two very similar etchings of John Sullivan, #194 and #195, which he attributes to an engraving soon after the Quebec campaign by C. Corbutt in London. He states that additional mezzotints were done from that same portrait in Augsburg and Paris. He also pictures an engraving after the Corbutt portrait which appeared in Korn's Geschichte der Kriege, published in Nurnberg in 1778. This version of the portrait may also be after the Corbutt, but is without any background features.

This engraving was displayed in an exhibition at Anderson House entitled "New York in the American Revolution", from September 29, 1998 - April 3, 1999.
John Sullivan was an original member of the Society of the Cinncinnat from the state of New Hampshire.
