Note
Concerning the appointment of Roane's son to the army, Wilkinson reports seeing Secretary of War Henry Dearborn, who announced that the appointment "rests with the President without my interference." Young Roane was appointed Captain of Infantry on 25 January, not of Dragoons on the 12th as letter predicts.
