Note
Bust in profile, to the left, in uniform. The eagle of the Society of the Cincinnati is shown on his left lapel. Vignette. While at one time this portrait was thought to be after a pastel attributed to James Sharples in the collections of Independence National Historical Park, it is now appropriate to indicate that the artist is unidentified.

This Thomas Collection copy was displayed in an exhibition at Anderson House entitled, New York in the American Revolution, September 29, 1998 - April 3, 1999.
A second copy, on the smaller sheet, was removed from its frame to be preserved in the P&E files in the vault. This copy was originally accessioned in October 1963 as Museum #1030 and later accessioned in the library as P&E L1993.835
James Clinton was an original member of the Society for the Cincinnati from the State of New York.
