Within a week of the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the Massachusetts Committee of safety began mustering companies of men "for the preservation of American liberty."
On facing page: "You are hereby acquainted that the commission of a captain in said service shall be made out for you as soon as you have compleated the said inlistment ...; you will also be allowed to nominate 2 subalterns to serve under you, who will receive commissions accordingly.... [signed] Jos. Warren, Chairman.
Leighton, of York County, was a Captain of Scammon's Massachusetts [militia?] Regiment to December 1775.
