Revolutionary war journal on General Arnold's expedition to Quebec and the author's subsequent imprisonment in Canada; covering the period from Sept. 13, 1775 to Aug. 5, 1776, including daily detailed account of an enlisted man's experience. Published in three limited editions: "A journal of the expedition to Quebec in the year 1775, under the command of Colonel Benedict Arnold," 1857 & 1864; "The journal of James Melvin, private soldier in Arnold's expedition against Quebec in the year 1775," 1902. Also includes 2 essays at front, representing the author's philosophical concerns of the time: "Treatise upon air"; "An explanation of Scripture taken from the epistle of St. Paul the apostle to the Gallations ...," which concludes, embracing St. Paul's advice: "stand fast in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free; and be not Intangled again with the yoke of bondage." In red morocco gilt pull-off case. Bookplate: LMP (Lowell Mason Palmer) Typed letter from Hopkins & Hopkins, Washington to Emily Wilder Leavitt, Boston, October 11, 1899 regarding the pension rolls for James Melvin, removed & stored in case file.
