Note
Volume 4 issued years after the rest of the set, was largely destroyed by fire and only a few copies survived; after Burk's death, this volume continued by Skelton Jones and L.H. Girardin, supposedly with the aid of Jefferson, to whom it is dedicated. Jefferson also assisted Burk for v. 2 & 3 by lending him manuscripts, newspapers, etc.
Imprint varies: v. 4 printed by M. W. Dunnavant.
Library copy is extra-illustrated with frontispiece portraits and an 18th century folding map.
