Manuscript volume recording ballistic experiments conducted at Woolwich on 21 May 1779 comparing the performance of a New York rifle and a smooth-bore firearm of similar dimensions. The experiments were undertaken under the direction of Thomas Desaguliers (1721–1780), Chief Firemaster of the Royal Artillery, during the American Revolutionary War. The volume contains approximately thirty large manuscript diagrams plotting shot placement on targets and documenting comparative tests of accuracy, range, and consistency. The experiments reflect British interest in evaluating the effectiveness of rifle technology associated with American marksmen and light infantry service during the war.
