Signed: No. 71 Bundury del; Varton sculp. Hand colored French version of the original Bunbury engraving titled "Recruits." Satirizes the British efforts to expand their armed forces to prepare to defend the homeland against the threat of invasion from France in 1779-1780. A strapping officer inspects a motley group of three men-one in an apron, another in tattered clothes-outside a public house. A bystander grins at them, and a young woman sits beside a basket in the right foreground. Library also has "Recruits" (P&E L2014F65), https://cdm16923.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/p16923coll5/id/21/rec/1.
